ONCE UPON A HIGHLAND CHRISTMAS

Warrior Grim Mackintosh understands why his friend Archibald MacNab has decreed there be no trace of Christmas in his castle. After a devastating attack destroyed everything-and everyone-in Archie’s life, he prefers to stew in his own misery until the holiday passes. But Duncreag has seen enough tragedy. Grim decides to throw a grand Yuletide feast, one that the bards will sing about for years to come, one that will remind his laird how beloved he is. He can’t do it alone, though. Grim needs an accomplice . . .

There’s nothing Breena O’Doherty won’t do for Archie, so she’s thrilled to help Grim with his plan. Yet she has a Christmas wish all her own-to win Grim’s heart-and this might be her only chance to make it come true. As Breena and Grim work together to bring the joy of the season to the cold, gloomy castle and to the heart of the cantankerous chieftain, an undeniable passion ignites between them. But when a shocking secret about Breena’s past comes to light, threatening everything she holds dear, will it ruin Christmas in Duncreag forevermore?

An interview with Fingal MacIan

One frequent comment that I receive is how much readers love Fingal MacIan. Although my next book, Highland Courage, which is due for release this April is not about Fingal, I am in the process of writing Highland Intrigue, which will feature his story. Until then, I thought perhaps my readers might enjoy learning a bit more about him so he has kindly consented to participate in an interview.

Ceci: Thank you for agreeing to do an interview for me. You have become quite a favorite with readers, what do you think of that?

Fingal: I have never been one to shun the attention of bonny lasses. (He winks at me, the rogue)

Ceci: Why do you think you have become so popular with them?

Fingal: I am absolutely adorable, don’t ye think?

Ceci: You are adorable, but I am serious, what do you think they see in you aside from your handsome face?

Fingal: Frankly, I’m not sure. My life wasn’t always easy. I learned early that I needed friends and the best way to win them was to be light-hearted, funny and considerate. If I had to tell someone to go to hell, I tried to make them look forward to the trip.

Ceci: Yes, I can see you doing that. Lady Chisholm said that you are one of the few men who can best a foe and yet leave his ego intact. Your jovial nature may have something to do with your popularity, but I think it goes deeper. You are steadfastly loyal even in the face of Niall’s suspicious nature.

Fingal: Loyalty is important to me. I won’t lie, my brother’s mistrust hurt deeply. He is a good man and a strong leader but the fact is he didn’t know me very well. He had no real way of knowing how much I admired him and how loyal I really was. On top of that, Tadhg Matheson and I became good friends while we both trained with Chisholm so when the raids started it was hard for Niall to believe I was not involved. I realize now he probably made me one of his guardsmen because he wanted me to keep a close eye on me.

Ceci: Why is that? It was obvious to his commander and captains not to mention Lady Katherine.

Fingal: He didn’t really know me that well. I am eight years younger than he is and he was sent to train under Laird MacClennan when I was just six years old. I was away training with Laird Chisholm when he returned to Duncurra. His opinion of me was probably colored by his experiences with my mother. Furthermore, I don’t think anyone really understands Niall completely. If my life was hard, his was worse. He had a loving mother who he lost at the age of seven. My mother was terribly cruel to him, to both of us really.

Ceci: Fingal, if she was cruel to both of you, why are you not as bitter as he is?

Fingal: I suspect it might have been worse for Niall. She was a vile presence in his life for about six years, from the time his father married her until Niall went to train with Laird MacLennan. I probably had things easier because I was little more than a bairn most of that time. She didn’t begin spending time at court in Edinburgh until after Niall went to train with Laird MacLennan. She was much less of a presence in my life than she was in his.

Ceci: Still he did experience a mother’s love for a few years and you never had that.

Fingal: That’s not true. Lady Ina Chisholm was a solid loving presence in my life for over ten years. Laird and Lady Chisholm had three daughters and a son and I felt very much a part of that family.

Ceci: Three daughters? (I waggle my eyebrows) Any chance for a love-match there?

Fingal: Sadly no. They are all married. I had a wee crush on his youngest daughter, Rhona, for a while, but she only had eyes for Peadar MacKenzie. He is a fine man from a very powerful family. They were just recently married and I couldn’t be happier for them.

Ceci: Hmm. I think people like you because you really do seem to see the best in others. I suspect my readers will agree that your wife will be a very lucky lass.

Fingal: (Laughs) I don’t know about that. Do ye see a wife in my future?

Ceci: I am the one asking the questions here young man. However, yes I do see a wife in your future.

Fingal: Care to share?

Ceci: Not just yet. My readers love you, I have to make sure she is worthy of you. But trust me, you will be the first to know. Before I close this interview, many people have commented on how kind and loving you are toward Tomas. Can you tell us anything about him?

Fingal: (Smiles) I do love Tomas. Who wouldn’t? He is the personification of potential. Like myself and Niall, he has had a very rough start in life yet in spite of that he still sees life as an adventure. Fortune has smiled on him and given him two strong, loving parents. It will be interesting to see what kind of man Tomas grows into.

Ceci: Yes, I think it will be. That gives me an idea…

What a year!

It has been just over a year since I started this blog. I had just been offered a contract for Highland Solution and had spent several days trying to choose a pen name. For those of you who are new to my blog, I am a professional medical writer, published under my real name and I thought perhaps it would be best to publish fiction under a different name. After days of discussions and internet searches trying to find something unique, I chose Ceci Giltenan, registered a domain and set up this website a few days before Thanksgiving last year.

On the eve of Thanksgiving it feels appropriate to take a look back at the year in which one of my fondest dreams became a reality. The sheer joy of receiving a contract gave way to a lengthy, but enlightening editing process the likes of which I can only compare to expecting one’s first child. I was excited and couldn’t wait for September to come and at the same time was anxious about what would happen when it did.

Since Highland Solution was released it has been a wild ride. I was absolutely thrilled when it started selling well. The first positive reviews sent me over the moon. People who didn’t know me, read the book and loved it enough to tell the world (at least the world of Amazon). Then a few negative reviews floated in and as much as I had tried to prepare myself for them, they hurt. Still the multitude of positive reviews from all over the world delight me more than I can tell you. As a reader, I never really had an appreciation for what these mean to an author.

Today I looked at the statistics for this blog and was floored. My site has been viewed over 3000 times by people on 6 continents in 41 countries. These numbers may not be considered huge by some standards but to me they are astounding. Part of me worried that no one outside of my family and friends would visit.

So as I head out to celebrate Thanksgiving with my family, I want to thank everyone who has been a part of this journey with me. Certainly first and foremost my family and friends whose love and support has been unwavering. I would also like to thank Champagne Books for giving me the opportunity to share the characters I love with the world and specifically my editor Diane Badzinski for helping me take what was a nice story and transform it into a great read. Many thanks and virtual hugs to my new and faithful fans, especially Ann and Barb who embraced me and Highland Solution immediately. Finally, thank you to all of my readers whether you loved Highland Solution or not, you took the chance, purchased the book and read it. I am grateful to you.

Warmest wishes,
Ceci

Unconditional Love

What does it mean to love unconditionally? Wikipedia defines it as “affection, without limitation.” I suppose that is accurate to a degree, but I think it misses the subtleties. It is very easy to have affection for some people without limitation when they are infinitely “lovable” and create no hurdles. I have several friends like this, one of whom is the embodiment of love and acceptance. I admire her tremendously and gave many of her personality traits to Katherine, the heroine of Highland Solution. The wonderful thing is, while my friend might read this, she isn’t likely to know I’m referring to her.:-) It isn’t hard to love her without limitation and therefore it is understandable why readers love Katherine. Although some readers think she doesn’t stand up for herself, others recognize that she picks her moments.

In considering unconditional love, I am reminded of the old philosophical question, “if a tree falls in the forest and there is no one to hear it, did it make a noise?” If someone is very easy to love and your ability to love them is never challenged, can your love truly be considered unconditional? The fact is, loving someone who has unlovable characteristics is a challenge, but the more road blocks they create, the more likely they are to need this love. Clearly my hero, Niall, is one of these people. While he has his good points, he is also mistrustful, stubborn and at times very hard to love. Katherine makes the choice to love him anyway. She becomes annoyed and even angry at times. However she chooses her moments wisely. In most cases, she doesn’t fly off the handle in public (something I can’t say that I have the control to do). Her consistent loving nature is exactly what he needs in order to learn how to love her with the same intensity.

Numerous readers have commented on how “annoying” Niall’s mistrust is but my question is, if he was a perfectly lovable paragon of virtue, where would the conflict be? Where would the opportunity for unconditional love be? We live in a disposable world. It is not uncommon for friends or lovers to abandon a relationship at the first sign of conflict. I wanted to portray a different dynamic. I have written before about my Indian friend whose marriage was arranged. She told me it was her responsibility to make the marriage work (for more details read https://cecigiltenan.com/2013/09/21/what-defines-a-strong-woman/). The work involved in a successful marriage between less than perfect people (and aren’t we all less than perfect) is considerable. Add to that the fact that neither partner chose the other one and the effort required becomes monumental.

My hero is far from perfect, but he is redeemable. I think readers who love Niall, even with his flaws, see what Katherine does, he is worth the work. Therefore, while Highland Solution is fiction, I believe it uniquely reflects the challenges faced in all relationships.

Your first peek at Highland Courage

Happy Friday!

I have been busily working on final edits for Highland Courage and I promised you all a glimpse. So without further ado, here is the draft back blurb for Highland Courage:

Her parents want a betrothal, but Mairead MacKenzie can’t get married without revealing her secret and no man will wed her once he knows.

Plain in comparison to her siblings and extremely reserved, Mairead has been called “MacKenzie’s Mouse” since she was a child. No one knows the reason for her timidity and she would just as soon keep it that way. When her parents arrange a betrothal to Laird Tadhg Matheson she is horrified. She only sees one way to prevent an old secret from becoming a new scandal.

Tadhg Matheson admires and respects the MacKenzies. While an alliance with them through marriage to Mairead would be in his clan’s best interest, he knows Laird MacKenzie seeks a closer alliance with another clan. When Tadhg learns of her terrible shyness and her youngest brother’s fears about her, Tadhg offers for her anyway.

Secrets always have a way of revealing themselves. With Tadhg’s unconditional love, can Mairead find the strength and courage she needs to handle the consequences when they do?

Highland Courage, is scheduled for release in April 2014 and continues the story of Tadhg Matheson who readers meet in Highland Solution. It is not necessary to read Highland Solution first but you may wish to because Highland Courage does contain spoilers.

Any questions?

On Monday, an interview I gave was featured on the blog Love Saves the World (www.lovesavestheworld.com). Several readers posted great questions, that I have never been asked. They were so good in fact, that I decided to repost them here, with my answers:

A reader named Meghan (not my daughter Meghan) asked:

“What made you want to write about Highlanders? Do you have any personal connection?”

Meghan, I have always loved Highland romance. I started reading historical romance when I was a teenager. Although my family has been in the United States since the 1600s, I do have strong Scottish heritage so I started reading historical romances set in Scotland and the Highlands and was hooked. There is something elementally romantic about the medieval Highlands so that is where I have chosen to set my first books.

A reader named Mary asked:

“How do you choose your names for characters?”

Mary, a lot of things come into play when choosing names for my character. I create a list of Gaelic names that I like. As I develop a character in my mind, I look through the list for a name that resonates with who I imagine. Sometimes the meanings of names come into play. For example, the horse that Niall gives Katherine is named Eachan, which means “brown horse.”

The boy Tomas is named after a dear friend’s son, Thomas. Thomas is grown up now but when I imagined what Tomas looked like, how he would act, and what he would say, I imagined Thomas when he was little.

Katherine’s name has special significance. My mother-in-law (who I adored, God rest her soul) was named Katherine Giltenan. She possessed a quiet strength and humor that I truly admired. My daughter’s middle name is Cathleen (the Irish Gaelic for Katherine), in honor of her Grandmother. She too is a loving, wise, compassionate woman. Katherine’s character is formed using many aspects of both of these women who I love and respect.

If there are any other questions floating around out there, feel free to ask.
