Sexy is in the eyes of the beholder

Even if one removes “erotic romance” from the mix, clearly the sexual content of all romance is not created equal. I am perfectly content to read a novel that has no sexual content other than kissing (sweet), or only implied sex (think PG-rated). I don’t mind if the content is hotter, however, I generally find myself skipping pages if there is too much of a focus on the physical relationship.

My books cannot be classified as “sweet.” The intimate scenes I write are short, but steamy. When I removed the most descriptive sex scenes from Highland Solution, at the request of a young family member who wanted to read it, I only removed about 300 words from a 78,000 word novel.

Still, today I find myself chuckling at some Amazon reviews. One reviewer in the UK who gave it 3 stars commented that it wasn’t sexy enough, while a reviewer in the US who loved it and gave it 5-stars, warns readers who prefer a more chaste story “beware: sexual scenes throughout.”

How do you decide what book might be too graphic for  your tastes? Back in the day of paper books, one could flip through the whole book to get an idea, but that isn’t possible with ebooks. Until recently, I have relied on reader reviews to judge whether a romance would be too “sexy” for my tastes. Obviously that isn’t particularly useful as opinions vary dramatically. Some romance review sites include a description of the sexual content. All Romance E-books has a heat index and they rate books using the following scale:

1 flame– Stories will either not have consummated love scenes, or if the loves scenes are consummated detail is not  given.
2 flames– Stories will have some love scenes.  These will be more sensual then graphic and will mostly rely on euphemism.
3 flames– Stories will have sensual, yet more explicit love scenes, and the language used to describe them may be more graphic and direct.
4 flames– Stories have frequent love scenes that are explicit and described using graphic and direct language.
5 flames– Stories have a high frequency of love scenes that are explicit, described using graphic and direct language,  and/or contain subject matter that some readers may consider objectionable.

I think this helps to a point. The reader can understand what kind of love scenes are included, but this tells nothing about the overall amount of them. ARE classified Highland Solution as 3-flames and it is my guess that Highland Courage will be much the same. This is a pretty accurate description in my opinion, but there are really only three significant love scenes in Highland Solution. Someone who prefers more than that might still be disappointed.

Does the sexual content matter to you? If it does, how do you decide what to buy and do you think there is a better way to guide readers in selecting for this content?

Please welcome Champagne Author, Jeanne Arnold with giveaway!

Jeanne Arnold is an author of young adult romance. At a young age she found her creative outlet in art, and for years her fictional characters came to life in drawings and paintings, until they demanded a voice. Now they grace the pages of her stories. Jeanne shares her time with her fictional teenage counterparts and her human family in Central New York. Her debut young adult romance, Stubborn was released on Monday by Champagne books. Her next book is The Haunt of Thirteen Curves due for release in June, 2014.

I will be giving away a copy of Stubborn to one lucky reader. Simply leave a comment to enter the giveaway!

Jeanne Arnold Image

Congratulations Jeanne! Can you tell us a bit about your new release?

Stubborn is about a seventeen-year-old who is sent to North Dakota as punishment to help her aunt run a boarding house for oil field hands. Avery Ross’s summer flips upside down when she becomes involved with a family of striking brothers and falls hard for the youngest, Gabriel Halden, against her aunt’s forewarnings, causing more tribulations than any of them could anticipate. Find out how one pair of hazel eyes sets off the stormiest summer in Avery’s life.

Do you have other works in process?

I’m always working on two or three books at a time, sometimes even four or five. While I’m finishing one, I’m working out the next in my head, editing or revising another. I’ve recently finished a paranormal young adult romance set in the depression era. I’m currently writing a contemporary young adult romance and I’m plotting out the third book in my Stubborn series.

Who will enjoy your book?

Stubborn is slightly edgier than my other young adult works, however I write for thirteen-year-olds and all the way up to one-hundred-year-olds. I enjoy reading young adult so I hope readers of all ages will enjoy reading Stubborn too. Everyone can relate to their inner-teen, and a time when love was new and everything was possible.

Did you have input into the cover art? If so did it turn out as you had hoped?

I was grateful to be able to suggest cover ideas with this publisher, send sketches and images and describe in detail what I envisioned. I’m very pleased with my design. The figures on my cover are a fair representation of my main characters and I love the romantic lighting effect. I’m already thinking about what cover art I would like for my June release, The Haunt of Thirteen Curves.

If you could own one painting from any collection on earth but could never sell it, what would you choose?

I would love to own any of Mary Cassatt’s pieces.   I intend to buy one of her dry points in my lifetime. I’d be happy to own anything by an American Impressionist. My mantle is in need of something colorful and inspiring.

If you could host a dinner party with any four famous people (living or dead) who would it be?

Nefertiti, Jim Henson, Thomas Jefferson and Jane Austen are the first few that pop into my head. If given the time, my list could go on and on.

What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment, personally or professionally?

Professionally, my greatest accomplishment is writing ten books in three years and getting my first two publishing contracts after changing focus from illustration and design. I began writing the story of how my husband and I met in high school and within a year I had representation by a literary agency and my books were being read by living, breathing editors.

What would the person who knows you best say is your best character traits?

My husband calls me stubborn and strong-willed, dedicated and determined. Go figure.

Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years?

I would like to be doing what I’m doing now, writing everyday surrounded by my family, filling my book shelves with my books for future generations to enjoy. I don’t see myself giving up writing.

Tell me at least one little known fact about you.

I’m extremely detail oriented. I can remember fine details that happened twenty or thirty years ago. Ask me what I wore on the first day of seventh grade and I will draw myself head to toe, including hairstyle and jewelry.

Is there anything you would like your readers to know about you?

I write for both myself and for my readers to escape into an imaginary world. Writing in my teen voice is one of the most creatively satisfying things I do. I want to give my readers characters to root for and the book boyfriends they dream about falling in love with and can’t stop thinking about.

“Tell a Friend” Tuesday

Available September 3, 2013 from Champagne Books

Highland Solution

Those of you who have been on this journey with me know that when I started, I knew NOTHING about promoting a book. Experienced authors told me that word of mouth would always be the best promotional tool. I have tried lots of things including a variety of different kinds of advertising. Still, my best results have always been from direct communication with other people–word of mouth.

So, I am asking all of my friends and readers to simply tell one other person about Highland Solution today. Tell anyone, a neighbor, a coworker or the receptionist at your dentist’s office. If you enjoyed reading it and haven’t left a review on Amazon (Goodreads, Barnes & Noble or other site), consider doing that now. Perhaps even better (or in addition to an Amazon or similar review), post a review on your Facebook page. It is a cold day and maybe some of your friends are home from work or school today. What better way to spend a day off than snuggled up with a good book?

If you haven’t read Highland Solution yet, do a solid for another author you admire and share something about one of their books which you have read. Oh, and do read Highland Solution when you get the chance! 🙂

Hugs,

Ceci

Cold Weather Comfort Food

There is a massive amount of record cold air sitting over the northern United States and Canada today. It is a good day to stay cozy and snuggled up inside. Even here in southwest Florida it is a cool, grey day. If I was freezing in New Jersey today, I would be making soup or some other hearty, comfort food. So what is your favorite cold weather comfort food?

Two of my favorites are the following simple baked stews.

Baked Beef Stew
1 – 2 lb stew beef
2 – 3 large potatoes
2 – 3 large carrots
1 large onion
2 to 3 celery stalks
Other vegetables as desired
1 tsp salt
½ tsp pepper
1 Tbsp. Sugar
3 Tbsp Tapioca
28 oz can V-8 Juice

Cut beef and vegetables into bite size chunks. Mix all ingredients in an oven safe baking dish (no need to brown meat). Bake at 350 until potatoes are soft (about 2 hours). More tender vegetables, such as zucchini or fresh mushrooms can be added about 20 minutes before the stew is done.

Chicken Pot Roast
1 Chicken, whole or cut up
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
1 tsp savory
1 tsp sage
1 tsp powdered garlic or 2 fresh cloves minced
1 tsp crushed rosemary
12 – 16 small red potatoes
1 – 2 Cups whole baby carrots
1 large onion cut into 1 inch chunks
2 to 3 celery stalks cut into chunks
Other vegetables as desired
2-4 Cups chicken broth or stock
2-3 Cups dry white wine

NOTE: all amounts above are suggested, use more or less depending on your tastes and the size of your baking dish!

Sprinkle seasonings inside and outside whole chicken or over chicken pieces. Heat olive oil, garlic and rosemary on stove top and brown chicken lightly. It is best to use a pot that has a lid and can be used on both the stove top and oven, however if you don’t have one the chicken can be transferred to an oven safe dish after the chicken is browned. Put some of the onions and celery in the cavity (if you are using a whole chicken), then layer vegetables around chicken. Pour chicken broth and wine over chicken, cover and bake at 350 until potatoes are tender, and chicken has reached an internal temperature of at least 165 (about 1.5 to 2 hours). If you wish to use tender vegetables such as mushrooms or zucchini, add them 20 to 30 minutes before finished.

Please feel free to share a favorite cold weather recipe!

Guest Author Misa Buckley, with Giveaway

Today it is my pleasure to introduce you to fellow Champagne Author, Misa Buckley. Misa is the author of science fiction and fantasy romance and her newest novella Archangel will be released this Monday, January 6, 2014. I will be providing a free copy of Archangel to one lucky reader. Simply comment on this post for a chance to win. I will announce the winner at noon on the day of release.

About Misa:
Misa Buckley grew up watching Doctor Who and Star Trek and reading fantasies from Anne McCaffrey and David Eddings. So when she started writing NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in 2007, it was science fiction that she wrote. She found writing a much-needed haven from the crazy of raising five children and a Land Rover-obsessed husband.

It took her a few years to take the step from writing to submitting, but she is now published through Decadent Publishing and Champagne Books, as well as self-publishing. Her books involve characters who experience adventure, romance and really hot sex on their way to a happily-ever-after.

Thank you for agreeing to do an interview for me. Please tell us about Archangel.

Thank you for having me, Ceci.

Archangel is a much-anticipated release, having been written back in April 2012. It’s a novella very close to my heart that brought about a few problems, namely me being very uncertain as to whether it was “good enough”. I finally submitted it to my editor but then had a meltdown of epic proportions and delayed publication by six months.

So what on Earth could such a troublesome story be about? Well, a man called Gabriel Kemp is struck in a hit-and-run and ends up getting a second chance… as an angel. Gabe isn’t what you’d call angelic. He’s a crook who’s not adverse to pulling a trigger. Or picking up girls in bars. And he’s not overly happy about having a mission from God, but heck, it beats being dead.

Gabe’s mission is to protect a young woman who’s having psychic visions of a serial killer. Of course, it’s not quite that simple, but that’d be telling. Spoilers, Sweetie.

Do you have other works in process?
I always have works in process! At the moment, I’m working on a series of science fiction shorts, also contracted to Champagne Books. Superheroes instead of angels, though more Misfits than Superman.

What draws you to your genre?
I’ve been a science fiction fan since I was about three years old. I grew up watching Doctor Who, Star Trek, and the Shuttle launches. I love the possibilities of science fiction and the adventure of space travel. So writing science fiction was very much the natural choice.

Did you have input into the cover art? If so did it turn out as you had hoped?
Champagne have a cover art form, so do try and capture the author’s vision. I had something a bit different in mind, but I do like the cover and they know what sells.

I find typical interview questions can be repetitive after a while so the questions that follow while not typical, are intended to be fun. If you could instantly transport yourself to anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
Los Angeles. I visited back in 2009 and would love to go back, this time taking in the sights.

If you could have been the author of any single book already written, which one would it be?
I have serious plot envy over L.A. Witt’s STATIC. It’s just the best premise, and I wish I’d come up with it.

If you could host a dinner party with any four famous people (living or dead) who would they be?
Definitely Cliff Simon. Then Tom Hiddleston because he has the moves. Matt Smith because every good dinner party needs a Doctor. And finally girl-crush Jaime Murray to even things out.

Note from Ceci – I didn’t know who these people were so I looked them up. Now that I have seen all of these lovely actors and their lists of credits, I am inviting a fifth person to the dinner. Me. 😉

If you won the lottery what is the first thing you would do?
Buy a house with a library and a very large garden.

What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment, personally or professionally?
To date, getting up on stage at the Andromeda One convention and actually talking to the audience. I’m usually not very good at that.

Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years?
In a house with a library and a very large garden? I’d like to have published at least one novel and perhaps have an agent.

Is there anything you would like your readers to know about you?
I can be stalked on Twitter @MisaBuckley or at my website http://www.misabuckley.com

archangel-sm
Patient. Merciful. Protective… One out of three ain’t bad.

Small time crook Gabriel Kemp is just trying to make a living when a hit-and-run leaves him for dead. Waking up in hospital to an angel at his bedside gives him a second chance, but one that comes with a condition.

Fleeing San Francisco doesn’t mean he can evade the deal either – he still manages to meet Abigail Harris, the woman he’s promised to protect. He might not believe in the psychic visions she claims to have, but he knows if there’s even a chance she can identify the serial killer terrorizing down-town L.A. then she’s in danger.

The only way to keep Abby safe is to find and stop the killer. If that means taking on the devil determined to turn the City of Angels into the City of Hell on Earth, then so be it.

Archangel will be released on Monday and will be available at Amazon and Champagne Books. For an opportunity to win a free electronic copy, leave a comment. A winner will be selected at noon on Monday.
